God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Corinthians 1:9
The dictionary defines the word alliance as, “a relationship based on similarity of interests, nature, or qualities.” The word alliance does not appear in our Bible, but the concept and principles of an alliance do. We see in Scripture that alliances can lead to compromise (Numbers 25:1). During the 2010 General Election in the United Kingdom something unusual happened. The UK had what is called a hung parliament. This means that no party had an overall majority in the House of Commons. The largest party was the Conservative Party with 306 seats. The Conservative Party formed a coalition, which is like an alliance, with the third largest party the Liberal Democrats. For the first time in a generation, the UK had a government made up of MPs from two different parties. This led to a compromise on both sides and caused many people to feel that they were lied to and did not get what they expected.
The enemies of Joshua made alliances that actually benefited Joshua. In Joshua 10:5-8 we read about the five kings of the Amorites and the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon coming together against Gibeon. This alliance sounded good to the enemies of Joshua but did not work. As we read in verse 8, “The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands; not one of them shall stand before you.”
At the heart of the Gospel is reconciliation between us and God. We who were once in alliance with sin and the devil have been brought nigh to the Saviour. Sinners who were enemies of God are now heirs of God and members of his body. The offer of the Gospel is declared to all mankind. Everyone has the chance to hear the Gospel and to come to God. The alliance we have in Christ is beyond human understanding. We have the opportunity to have a relationship with God based on the finished work of Christ. Do not let this golden opportunity pass you by.
