On 4 January 1581, James Ussher was born in Dublin, Ireland. A prodigious scholar, Ussher would become one of the most influential theologians and historians of the 17th century, eventually serving as the Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland.

Ussher is best remembered for his monumental work in biblical chronology. Through meticulous study of Scripture, ancient languages, and historical records, he produced Annales Veteris Testamenti (1650–1654), a timeline of world history anchored to the Bible. His most famous conclusion dated the creation of the world to 4004 BC, a calculation that, while debated today, reflected an extraordinary commitment to scholarly precision in his era.

Beyond chronology, Ussher defended Reformed doctrine, preserved key historical manuscripts, and contributed significantly to the study of early church history. His learning earned him respect across Europe, influencing generations of historians and theologians.

James Ussher’s birth reminds us that rigorous study and devotion to truth have long been pillars of Christian scholarship. His legacy challenges modern believers to value history, Scripture, and careful thinking in service of faith.
