“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” – John 1:14

In the Gospel of John, the birth of Christ is not described with shepherds, wise men, or a manger, it is described as the eternal Word becoming flesh. Jesus is the living Word of God, co-eternal with the Father, through whom all things were made. And yet, He humbled Himself to dwell among us.

The phrase “dwelt among us” literally means “tabernacled” among us. Just as God’s glory filled the tabernacle in the Old Testament, so now God’s presence has come in human form in Christ. In Jesus, we see the glory of God revealed, not distant, but near; not unapproachable, but full of grace and truth.

This is the miracle of Christmas: God became man without ceasing to be God. He entered our world so that He might bring us into His.

Thank God for sending His Son to live among us, and ask Him to help you experience His presence more deeply this Christmas.
