Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

1. Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that His hour had come that He might depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

2. And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, son of Simon that he should betray Him.

3. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He came forth from God and is going to God.

4. He rises from the supper and puts aside His garments, and taking a towel, He tied it around Himself.

5. Then He pours water into the basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

6. So He comes to Simon Peter, who says to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet.”

7. Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not know now, but you will understand after these things.”

8. Peter says to Him, “You shall never wash my feet,” Jesus answered him, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.”

9. Simon Peter says to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.”

10. Jesus says to him, “The one who has bathed has no need except to wash the feet, but is entirely clean, and you are clean, though not all.”

11. For He knew the one betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12. So when He had washed their feet and taken His garments and reclined again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you.”

13. “You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you speak rightly, for I am.”

14. “If, therefore, I the Lord and the Teacher have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”

15. “For I gave you an example, that just as I did to you, you also should do.”

16. “Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one sent greater than the one who sent him.”

17. “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”

The Betrayer Revealed

18. “Not concerning all of you do I speak; I know whom I have chosen, but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘The one eating My bread has lifted his heel against Me.’”

19. “From now I tell you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe that I am.”

20. “Truly, truly, I say to you, the one receiving whomever I shall send receives Me, and the one receiving Me receives the One who sent Me.”

21. When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.”

22. The disciples looked at one another, uncertain about whom He spoke.

23. One of His disciples, whom Jesus loved, reclined in the bosom of Jesus.

24. Simon Peter, therefore, nods to him to inquire who it might be of whom He speaks.

25. That disciple, thus leaning back upon the breast of Jesus, says to Him, “Lord, who is it.”

26. Jesus answers, “It is he to whom I shall give the piece of bread after I have dipped it.” So after dipping the piece of bread, He gives it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.

27. And after the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Therefore Jesus says to him, “What you do, do quickly.”

28. And none reclining knew why He said this to him.

29. For some were thinking, because Judas held the money-bag, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

30. So after receiving the piece of bread he went out immediately; and it was night.

The New Commandment

31. Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus says, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him.”

32. “If God is glorified in Him, God also will glorify Him in Himself, and He will glorify Him immediately.”

33. “Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek Me, and just as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I go you are not able to come,’ also to you I say now.”

34. “A new commandment I give to you, that you should love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also should love one another.”

35. “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love among one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

36. Simon Peter says to Him, “Lord, where are You going.” Jesus answered, “Where I go you are not able now to follow Me, but you will follow afterwards.”

37. Peter says to Him, “Lord, why am I not able to follow You now. I will lay down my life for You.”

38. Jesus answers, “Will you lay down your life for Me. Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow until you will have denied Me three times.”
