Mary Anoints Jesus
1. So then Jesus, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised from the dead.
2. They therefore made a supper for Him there, and Martha was serving, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with Him.
3. Then Mary, having taken a pound of ointment of very expensive pure nard, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.
4. But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, the one about to betray Him, says,
5. “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor.”
6. Now he said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the money-bag he used to take what was put in it.
7. Therefore Jesus said, “Allow her, that she may keep it for the day of My burial.”
8. “For the poor you always have with you, but Me you do not always have.”
The Plot Against Lazarus
9. Then a large crowd of the Judeans learned that He was there, and they came not only because of Jesus but also that they might see Lazarus whom He raised from the dead.
10. But the chief priests planned that they might also kill Lazarus,
11. because many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus because of him.
The Triumphal Entry
12. On the next day the large crowd that had come to the feast, having heard that Jesus was coming into Jerusalem,
13. took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him and were crying out, “Hosanna. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.”
14. And Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat upon it, as it is written,
15. “Fear not, daughter of Zion. Behold, your King comes, sitting upon a donkey’s colt.”
16. These things His disciples did not understand at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about Him, and that they had done these things to Him.
17. So the crowd that was with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify.
18. Because of this the crowd also met Him, for they heard He had done this sign.
19. So the Pharisees said among themselves, “You see that you accomplish nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him.”
Greeks Seek Jesus
20. Now there were certain Greeks among those going up that they might worship at the feast.
21. These therefore came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
22. Philip comes and tells Andrew; Andrew and Philip come and tell Jesus.
23. And Jesus answers them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man may be glorified.”
24. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falling into the earth dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”
25. “He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to eternal life.”
26. “If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me, and where I am, there also My servant will be; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honour him.”
Jesus Speaks of His Death
27. “Now My soul has been troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this I came to this hour.”
28. “Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and again will glorify it.”
29. Therefore the crowd standing and hearing was saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
30. Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sake.”
31. “Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.”
32. “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all to Myself.”
33. Now He was saying this, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.
34. Therefore the crowd answered Him, “We heard out of the Law that the Christ remains forever; and how do You say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”
35. Jesus then said to them, “Yet a little while the light is among you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.”
36. “While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” Jesus spoke these things and, having gone away, was hidden from them.
Unbelief and Fulfilment of Prophecy
37. But though He had done so many signs before them, they were not believing in Him,
38. that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which said, “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39. Because of this they could not believe, for again Isaiah said,
40. “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they should see with the eyes, and perceive with the heart, and turn, and I will heal them.”
41. These things Isaiah said because he saw His glory and spoke concerning Him.
42. Nevertheless even many of the rulers believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, lest they might be put out of the synagogue.
43. For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.
Jesus’ Final Public Declaration
44. But Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me does not believe in Me only, but in Him who sent Me.”
45. “And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.”
46. “I have come as light into the world, that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness.”
47. “And if anyone hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.”
48. “He who rejects Me and does not receive My words has one who judges him: the word which I have spoken, that will judge him on the last day.”
49. “For I have not spoken from Myself, but the Father who sent Me, He has given Me a commandment, what I should say and what I should speak.”
50. “And I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore, what I speak, just as the Father has said to Me, so I speak.”
