Jesus Travels in Galilee

1. And after these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for he would not walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
2. And the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Tabernacles, was near.
3. His brethren therefore said to him: “Depart hence, and go into Judea, that your disciples also may see the works which you do.”
4. For no man does anything in secret, and himself seeking to be known openly: if you do these things, show yourself to the world.”
5. For neither did his brethren believe in him.

Jesus Declines to Go, Then Goes in Secret

6. Then Jesus said to them: “My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.
7. The world cannot hate you; but me it hates, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.
8. Go up yourselves to this feast: I go not up yet to this feast, because my time is not yet fulfilled.
9. When he said these words to them, he abode still in Galilee.
10. But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

Jesus Teaches at the Feast

11. Then the Jews were seeking him at the feast, and said: “Where is he?”
12. And there was much murmuring among the crowd about him: some said, “He is a good man”; but others said, “He deceives the people.”
13. Yet no man spoke openly of him for fear of the Jews.

14. But about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
15. The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?”
16. Jesus answered them and said: “My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me.
17. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God or I speak of myself.
18. He that speaks of himself seeks his own glory; but he that seeks the glory of him that sent him, the same is true, and there is none unrighteousness in him.
19. “Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill me?”

Division Among the People

20. The crowd answered and said: “You have a devil: who seeks to kill you?”
21. Jesus answered and said to them: “I have done one work, and you all marvel.
22. Moses gave you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the sabbath you circumcise a man.
23. If a man on the sabbath receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken,  are you angry with me because I made a man wholly well on the sabbath?
24. Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”

25. Some therefore of Jerusalem said: “Is not this he whom they seek to kill?
26. And lo, he speaks boldly, and they say nothing to him. Do the rulers truly know that this is indeed the Christ?
27. But this we know from where this man is: and when Christ comes, no man knows whence he is.
28. Then Jesus cried aloud in the temple, teaching, and said: “You both know me, and know whence I am: and I have not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom you know not.
29. But I know him: for I am from him, and he has sent me.”

Streams of Living Water Promised — Mixed Responses

30. Many therefore when they heard these words said: “Of a truth this is the Prophet.”
31. Others said: “This is the Christ.” But some said: “Does the Christ come out of Galilee?
32. Has not the Scripture said that Christ comes of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?”

33. So there was a division among the people because of him.
34. And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

Official Inquiry — Defence by Nicodemus

35. The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said to them: “Why have you not brought him?”
36. The officers answered: “Never man spoke like this man.”
37. Then the Pharisees answered them: “Are you also deceived?
38. Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?
39. But this people who know not the law are accursed.”

40. Nicodemus said to them (he that came to Jesus by night, and was one of them):
41. “Does our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he does?”
42. They answered and said to him: “Are you also of Galilee? Search, and see: for out of Galilee arises no prophet.”
43. And every man went to his own house.
