“Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.”
Matthew 4:18–20
Every 30th of November, Christians in Scotland and around the world celebrate Saint Andrew’s Day, remembering the humble fisherman from Galilee who first heeded Christ’s call. Andrew’s response, immediate, wholehearted, and without hesitation remains a timeless example of faith in action.
Andrew was not a man of prominence or power, yet he became a bridge for others to meet Christ. In John 1:41–42 we read, “He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which translated means Christ). He brought him to Jesus.”
In that simple act, bringing his brother to Jesus, Andrew displayed the true heart of a disciple: one who not only follows Christ but invites others to follow as well.
Scotland, whose patron saint is Andrew, has long carried this missionary spirit. From the rugged islands of Iona, where Saint Columba spread the Gospel, to the preaching of John Knox in the Reformation, Scotland’s history is woven with stories of men and women who answered Christ’s call to be “fishers of men.”
Their courage and conviction shaped not only a nation but the faith of generations. The Celtic cross that marks so many Scottish hillsides stands as a testimony that the Gospel took deep root in Scottish soil, and that the call of Christ still echoes there today.
Andrew’s example challenges us to examine our own hearts. Are we willing to leave behind our “nets”, our comfort, pride, or fear, to follow Jesus? Do we, like Andrew, seek to bring others to the Savior?
The same Lord who called Andrew calls us, too. His invitation remains open: “Follow Me.” And when we do, He transforms our ordinary lives into instruments of His extraordinary grace.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
As You called Andrew by the sea, call us again today.
Teach us to follow You with courage and to share Your love with others.
Thank You for the faithful witness of Saint Andrew and for the heritage of faith that has shaped Scotland and the world.
May we, too, be fishers of men, faithful, humble, and ready to serve.
In Your holy name we pray, Amen.
“How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!”
Romans 10:15
