Jesus and Nicodemus
1. Now there was a man of the Pharisees, Nicodemus by name, a ruler of the Jews.
2. This one came to him by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as teacher, for no one is able to do these signs which you are doing unless God is with him.”
3. Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born from above he is not able to see the kingdom of God.”
4. Nicodemus says to him, “How is a person able to be born being old? He is not able to enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, is he?”
5. Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born of water and spirit, he is not able to enter into the kingdom of God.”
6. “What has been born of the flesh is flesh, and what has been born of the spirit is spirit.”
7. “Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’”
8. “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know from where it comes and where it goes; so is everyone having been born of the Spirit.”
9. Nicodemus answered and said to him, “How are these things able to be?”
10. Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things?”
11. “Truly, truly, I say to you, that which we know we speak, and that which we have seen we testify, and our testimony you do not receive.”
12. “If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?”
13. “And no one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man.”
14. “And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so it is necessary for the Son of Man to be lifted up.”
15. “So that everyone believing in him may have eternal life.”
16. “For God so loved the world, that he gave the only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him should not perish but should have eternal life.”
17. “For God did not send the Son into the world in order that he condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
18. “The one believing in him is not condemned; but the one not believing has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God.”
19. “And this is the judgement, that the light has come into the world, and the people loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil.”
20. “For everyone practising wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, so that his works may not be exposed.”
21. “But the one doing the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be made manifest that they have been done in God.”
John the Baptist Exalts the Messiah
22. After these things Jesus and his disciples came into the Judean countryside, and there he spent time with them and was baptising.
23. And John also was baptising in Aenon near to Salim, because many waters were there, and they were coming and were being baptised.
24. For John had not yet been thrown into prison.
25. Then a dispute arose from John’s disciples with a Judean concerning purification.
26. And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have borne witness behold, he is baptising, and all are going to him.”
27. John answered and said, “A person is not able to receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.”
28. “You yourselves testify to me that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before him.’”
29. “The one having the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, standing and hearing him, rejoices with joy because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine has been fulfilled.”
30. “He must increase, but I must decrease.”
31. “The one coming from above is above all; the one being from the earth is from the earth and speaks from the earth. The one coming from heaven is above all.”
32. “What he has seen and heard, this he testifies, and no one receives his testimony.”
33. “The one receiving his testimony has sealed that God is true.”
34. “For he whom God sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.”
35. “The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.”
36. “The one believing in the Son has eternal life; but the one disobeying the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.”
