The Resurrection of Jesus

1. But on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared, and some others with them.
2. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
3. And they entered and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4. And it happened, while they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling clothes.
5. And as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?
6. He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he spoke to you while he was still in Galilee,
7. saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’”
8. And they remembered his words.
9. And returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.
10. It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and the others with them, who told these things to the apostles.
11. And these words seemed to them like nonsense, and they did not believe them.

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples on the Road to Emmaus

12. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb. And stooping, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves, and he went away, marveling at what had happened.
13. And behold, two of them were going that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.
14. And they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.
15. And it happened, while they were talking and discussing together, that Jesus himself drew near and went with them.
16. But their eyes were kept from recognising him.
17. And he said to them, “What are you discussing together as you walk?” And they stood, looking sad.
18. One of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem, and do not know the things which have happened there in these days?”
19. And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
20. and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.
21. But we were hoping that it was he who was going to redeem Israel. And besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.
22. And some women of our company amazed us. Having been at the tomb early,
23. and not finding his body, they came saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.
24. And some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but him they did not see.”
25. And he said to them, “O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!
26. Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?”
27. And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

The Recognition of Jesus at the Breaking of Bread

28. And they drew near to the village, to which they were going. And he appeared as though he would go further.
29. And they constrained him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent.” And he went in to stay with them.
30. And it happened, as he sat at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke, and gave to them.
31. And their eyes were opened, and they recognised him. And he vanished from their sight.
32. And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while he talked with us on the road, and while he opened to us the Scriptures?”
33. And they rose up that same hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,
34. saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”
35. And they recounted what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples in Jerusalem

36. And as they spoke these things, he himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.”
37. But they were terrified and frightened, thinking they saw a spirit.
38. And he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
39. See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Handle me, and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
40. And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
41. And while they still did not believe for joy, and marvelled, he said to them, “Have you here any food?”
42. And they gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them.

Jesus Opens Their Understanding and Commissioning

43. And he said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me.”
44. Then he opened their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures,
45. and said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead on the third day,
46. and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
47. And you are witnesses of these things.
48. And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

The Ascension of Jesus

49. And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them.
50. And it happened, while he blessed them, he departed from them and was carried up into heaven.
51. And they worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
52. and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen
