The Parable of the Unjust Steward
1. And he also said to the disciples, “A certain man was rich who had a steward, and this one was accused to him as wasting his possessions.”
2. And having called him, he said to him, “What is this that I hear concerning you? Give the account of your stewardship, for you are not able any longer to steward.”
3. And the steward said within himself, “What shall I do, because my lord takes away from me the stewardship? To dig I am not strong; to beg I am ashamed.”
4. “I know what I shall do, so that when I am removed from the stewardship they might receive me into their houses.”
5. And having summoned each one of the debtors of his lord, he said to the first, “How much do you owe my lord?”
6. And he said, “A hundred measures of oil.” And he said to him, “Take your bill, and sitting down quickly, write fifty.”
7. Then he said to another, “And you, how much do you owe?” And he said, “A hundred measures of wheat.” He says to him, “Take your bill, and write eighty.”
8. And the lord commended the steward of unrighteousness because he acted shrewdly, for the sons of this age are more shrewd than the sons of light in their own generation.
9. And I say to you, make for yourselves friends out of the mammon of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.
Faithfulness in Little and Much
10. He that is faithful in the least is also faithful in much, and he that is unrighteous in the least is also unrighteous in much.
11. Therefore, if you have not become faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will entrust to you the true?
12. And if in what is another’s you have not become faithful, who will give to you what is yours?
13. No household-servant is able to serve two lords, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You are not able to serve God and mammon.
Rebuke of the Pharisees
14. And the Pharisees, being lovers of silver, were hearing all these things, and they were ridiculing him.
15. And he said to them, “You are the ones justifying yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts, for what is exalted among men is an abomination before God.”
16. “The Law and the Prophets were until John; from then the good news of the kingdom of God is proclaimed, and everyone forces his way into it.”
17. “And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of the Law to fall.”
18. “Everyone divorcing his wife and marrying another commits adultery, and the one marrying her who has been divorced from a husband commits adultery.”
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19. Now a certain man was rich, and he was clothing himself in purple and fine linen, feasting splendidly every day.
20. And a certain poor man named Lazarus had been laid at his gate, full of sores.
21. And desiring to be fed from the things falling from the table of the rich man; but even the dogs came and were licking his sores.
22. And it happened that the poor man died, and he was carried away by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.
23. And in Hades, lifting up his eyes, being in torments, he sees Abraham from afar, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24. And having cried out, he said, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am suffering in this flame.”
25. And Abraham said, “Child, remember that you received your good things in your life, and Lazarus likewise the bad; but now here he is comforted, and you are suffering.”
26. “And besides all these things, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those wanting to pass over from here to you are not able, nor can they cross from there to us.”
27. And he said, “I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house.”
28. “For I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come to this place of torment.”
29. But Abraham says to him, “They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.”
30. And he said, “No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead should go to them, they will repent.”
31. And he said to him, “If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.”
