Women Accompanying Jesus
1. And it happened after this that he was travelling through city and village, proclaiming and announcing the good news of the kingdom of God, and the twelve were with him.
2. And certain women who had been healed from evil spirits and sicknesses, Mary the one called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out.
3. And Joanna wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, who were ministering to them out of their possessions.
The Parable of the Sower
4. And as a great crowd was gathering and those from every city were coming to him, he spoke by a parable.
5. “The sower went out to sow his seed, and in the sowing some fell beside the road, and it was trampled, and the birds of the sky devoured it.
6. And other fell upon rock, and having sprouted it withered because it had no moisture.
7. And other fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up together and choked it.
8. And other fell into good soil, and having sprouted it produced fruit a hundredfold.” As he said these things he called out, “The one having ears to hear, let him hear.”
The Purpose of Parables
9. And his disciples were asking him what this parable might be.
10. And he said, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand’.”
The Parable Explained
11. “Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God.
12. And those beside the road are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart so that they may not believe and be saved.
13. And those on the rock are the ones who, when they hear, receive the word with joy, and these have no root; they believe for a time, but in time of testing they fall away.
14. And that which fell into the thorns, these are the ones who hear, but going along they are choked by cares and wealth and pleasures of life, and they bring no fruit to completion.
15. And that which is in the good soil, these are the ones who, with a noble and good heart, hear the word and hold it, and bear fruit with endurance.”
The Lamp on a Stand
16. “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but places it upon a stand so that those who enter may see the light.
17. For nothing is hidden that will not become visible, nor secret that will not be known and come to light.
18. Therefore take heed how you hear; for whoever has, it shall be given to him, and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has shall be taken from him.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers
19. And his mother and brothers came to him, and were not able to get near him because of the crowd.
20. And it was reported to him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside wishing to see you.”
21. And he answered and said to them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”
Calming the Storm
22. And it happened on one of the days that he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.” And they put out.
23. And as they were sailing he fell asleep. And a squall of wind came down upon the lake, and they were being swamped and were in danger.
24. And coming to him they woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing.” And he, having been awakened, rebuked the wind and the swelling of the water, and they ceased, and there was calm.
25. And he said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid and marvelled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?”
The Gerasene Demoniac
26. And they sailed down to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.
27. And as he stepped onto the land, a certain man from the city who had demons met him, who for a long time had worn no clothing and was not living in a house but among the tombs.
28. And seeing Jesus he cried out and fell before him, and with a loud voice said, “What to me and to you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.”
29. For he was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For many times it had seized him, and he was bound with chains and shackles, being guarded, yet breaking the restraints he was driven by the demon into the deserts.
30. And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered into him.
31. And they were begging him not to command them to depart into the abyss.
32. And there was there a herd of many pigs feeding on the hill, and they begged him to permit them to enter into them, and he permitted them.
33. And the demons, having gone out from the man, entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake and drowned.
34. And the herdsmen, seeing what had happened, fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside.
35. And people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.
36. And those who had seen it reported to them how the demon-possessed man had been healed.
37. And all the crowd of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, because they were gripped with great fear. And he, getting into the boat, returned.
38. And the man from whom the demons had gone out begged him to be with him, but he sent him away, saying.
39. “Return to your house, and relate how much God has done for you.” And he went away proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.
Jairus’ Daughter and the Woman with the Haemorrhage
40. And when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him.
41. And behold, a man named Jairus came, and he was a ruler of the synagogue, and falling at Jesus’ feet he begged him to come to his house.
42. For he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. And as he was going the crowds were pressing against him.
43. And a woman, who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her living on physicians and could not be healed by anyone.
44. Coming up behind him she touched the fringe of his cloak, and immediately her flow of blood stopped.
45. And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched me?” And while all were denying it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and press upon you.”
46. But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceived power going out from me.”
47. And the woman, seeing that she had not escaped notice, came trembling and fell before him, declaring before all the people for what reason she had touched him and how she had been healed immediately.
48. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”
49. While he was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue-ruler, saying, “Your daughter has died; do not trouble the teacher.”
50. But Jesus, hearing it, answered him, “Fear not; only believe, and she shall be made well.”
51. And when he came into the house he did not allow anyone to enter with him except Peter and John and James, and the father of the child and the mother.
52. And all were weeping and mourning her, but he said, “Do not weep; she has not died but is sleeping.”
53. And they were laughing at him, knowing that she had died.
54. But he, taking hold of her hand, called out, saying, “Child, arise.”
55. And her spirit returned, and she arose immediately, and he ordered that something be given her to eat.
56. And her parents were astonished, but he instructed them to tell no one what had happened.
