The Sending of the Seventy-Two

1. And after these things the Lord appointed seventy-two others, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to come.
2. And He was saying to them, “The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest that He may send out labourers into His harvest.”
3. “Go; behold, I am sending you as lambs in the midst of wolves.”
4. “Carry no purse, nor bag, nor sandals; and greet no one on the road.”
5. “Into whatever house you may enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’”
6. “And if a son of peace is there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you.”
7. “And remain in that same house, eating and drinking the things from them; for the labourer is worthy of his wages. Do not move from house to house.”
8. “And into whatever city you may enter and they receive you, eat the things set before you.”
9. “And heal the sick in it, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.’”
10. “But into whatever city you may enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say,”
11. “‘Even the dust that has clung to us from your city we wipe off against you; yet know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’”
12. “I tell you that it will be more tolerable for Sodom in that day than for that city.”

Woes to Unrepentant Towns

13. “Woe to you, Chorazin; woe to you, Bethsaida; for if the mighty works that have come to pass in you had happened in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.”
14. “Yet for Tyre and Sidon it will be more tolerable in the judgement than for you.”
15. “And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades.”
16. “He who hears you hears Me, and he who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”

The Return of the Seventy-Two

17. And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”
18. And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall like lightning out of heaven.”
19. “Behold, I have given you the authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall in any way harm you.”
20. “Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names have been written in heaven.”

Jesus’ Joy and Thanksgiving

21. In that same hour He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I confess You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and revealed them to infants; yes, Father, because thus it became well-pleasing in Your sight.”
22. “All things were delivered to Me by My Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.”
23. And turning to the disciples privately He said, “Blessed are the eyes that see the things you see.”
24. “For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see the things you are seeing and did not see them, and to hear the things you are hearing and did not hear them.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25. And behold, a certain lawyer stood up, testing Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
26. And He said to him, “What has been written in the Law? How do you read it?”
27. And he answering said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.”
28. And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you shall live.”
29. But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?”
30. Taking up the matter, Jesus said, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, who, after both stripping him and inflicting blows, went away, leaving him half-dead.”
31. “And by coincidence a certain priest was going down that road, and seeing him, he passed by on the opposite side.”
32. “And likewise a Levite also, coming to the place and seeing him, passed by on the opposite side.”
33. “But a certain Samaritan, travelling, came upon him, and seeing him, was moved with compassion.”
34. “And approaching, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and placing him upon his own animal, he brought him to an inn and took care of him.”
35. “And on the next day, taking out two denarii, he gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him, and whatever you spend besides this, I will repay you when I return.’”
36. “Which of these three seems to you to have become a neighbour to the one who fell among the robbers?”
37. And he said, “The one who showed mercy to him.” And Jesus said to him, “Go, and do likewise.”

Jesus at the Home of Martha and Mary

38. And as they were travelling, He entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house.
39. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word.
40. But Martha was being pulled about by much serving; and coming up to Him she said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Speak therefore to her, that she may help me.”
41. But answering, the Lord said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things.”
42. “But one thing is necessary; and Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken from her.”
