The Centurion’s Servant
1. And when He had completed all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered into Capernaum.
2. And a certain centurion’s servant, who was valued highly by him, being ill, was about to die.
3. And having heard about Jesus, he sent to Him elders of the Jews, asking Him that He would come to heal his servant.
4. And having come to Jesus, they begged Him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant this to him.”
5. “For he loves our nation, and he himself built the synagogue for us.”
6. And Jesus went with them. But already, when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof.”
7. “Therefore I did not deem myself worthy to come to You; but say a word, and my servant shall be healed.”
8. “For I also am a man set under authority, having soldiers under myself, and I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9. And having heard these things, Jesus marvelled at him, and turning to the crowd following Him, He said, “I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”
10. And returning to the house, those who had been sent found the servant healed.
The Widow’s Son Raised at Nain
11. And it came to pass on the next day that He went into a town called Nain, and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd.
12. And as He drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a considerable crowd from the town was with her.
13. And having seen her, the Lord felt compassion for her and said to her, “Do not weep.”
14. And having approached, He touched the coffin; and the bearers stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
15. And the dead man sat up and began to speak; and He gave him to his mother.
16. And fear took hold of all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us,” and, “God has visited His people.”
17. And this report about Him went out in all Judaea and all the surrounding region.
The Messengers from John the Baptist
18. And John’s disciples reported to him about all these things.
19. And having summoned two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or are we to expect another?”
20. And when the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or are we to expect another?’”
21. In that hour He healed many from diseases and afflictions and evil spirits, and He graciously gave sight to many blind people.
22. And answering, He said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor are brought good news.”
23. “And blessed is whoever is not offended by Me.”
24. And when the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed being shaken by the wind?”
25. “But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those in splendid clothing and living in luxury are in kings’ houses.”
26. “But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and far more than a prophet.”
27. “This is he concerning whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who shall prepare Your way before You.’”
28. “I say to you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
29. And all the people, and the tax-collectors too, having heard, justified God, having been baptised with the baptism of John.
30. But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God for themselves, not having been baptised by him.
31. “To what, therefore, shall I compare the people of this generation, and to what are they like?”
32. “They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, who say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed in mourning, and you did not weep.’”
33. “For John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’”
34. “The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a man who is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners.’”
35. “And wisdom is justified by all her children.”
The Sinful Woman Forgiven
36. And a certain one of the Pharisees invited Him to eat with him; and having entered the Pharisee’s house, He reclined at table.
37. And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, having learned that He was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of perfume.
38. And standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and with the hair of her head she wiped them, and she was kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.
39. And having seen this, the Pharisee who had invited Him said within himself, “If this man were a prophet, He would have known who and what kind of woman this is who touches Him, that she is a sinner.”
40. And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he says, “Teacher, speak.”
41. “A certain creditor had two debtors; the one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.”
42. “But as they had nothing with which to repay, he forgave them both. Therefore, which of them will love him more?”
43. And Simon answering said, “I suppose the one he forgave the more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.”
44. And having turned towards the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.”
45. “You gave Me no kiss, but from the moment I came in she has not ceased kissing My feet.”
46. “You did not anoint My head with oil, but she has anointed My feet with perfume.”
47. “For this reason I say to you, her many sins are forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.”
48. And He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
49. And those reclining at table with Him began to say within themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50. And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
