Jesus and the Sabbath

1. And it happened on a Sabbath that he was going through grainfields, and his disciples were plucking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them with their hands.
2. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath.”
3. And answering them, Jesus said, “Have you not read this, what David did when he was hungry, he and those with him.”
4. “How he went into the house of God and took and ate the bread of the presence, and also gave it to those with him, which it is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests alone.”
5. And he was saying to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

Healing on the Sabbath

6. And it happened on another Sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there, and his right hand was withered.
7. And the scribes and the Pharisees were watching him closely, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find to accuse him.
8. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Rise and stand in the midst.” And he arose and stood.
9. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy it.”
10. And looking around at them all, he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored.
11. But they were filled with senseless fury, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles Appointed

12. And it happened in those days that he went out to the mountain to pray, and spent the night in prayer to God.
13. And when it became day, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he also named apostles.
14. Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew.
15. Matthew and Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot.
16. Judas of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became the betrayer.

Jesus’ Teaching on the Plain

17. And coming down with them, he stood on a level place, and a large crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon.
18. Who came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses, and those troubled by unclean spirits were healed.
19. And all the crowd were seeking to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing all.

Blessings and Woes

20. And he, lifting up his eyes toward his disciples, said, “Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.”
21. “Blessed are those hungering now, for you will be filled. Blessed are those weeping now, for you will laugh.”
22. “Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and reproach you and cast out your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.”
23. “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven, for according to these things their fathers did to the prophets.”
24. “But woe to you who are rich, for you have your consolation.”
25. “Woe to you who are filled now, for you will hunger. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep.”
26. “Woe, when all people speak well of you, for according to these things their fathers did to the false prophets.”

Love for Enemies

27. “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.”
28. “Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”
29. “To the one striking you on the cheek, offer also the other, and from the one taking your cloak, do not withhold your tunic also.”
30. “To everyone who asks of you, give, and from the one taking what is yours, do not demand it back.”
31. “And as you wish that people would do to you, do likewise to them.”
32. “And if you love those loving you, what credit is it to you, for even sinners love those loving them.”
33. “And if you do good to those doing good to you, what credit is it to you, for even sinners do the same.”
34. “And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is it to you. Even sinners lend to sinners, that they might receive the same.”
35. “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and evil.”
36. “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”

Do Not Judge Hypocritically

37. “And do not judge, and you will certainly not be judged. And do not condemn, and you will certainly not be condemned. Release, and you will be released.”
38. “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, they will give into your lap. For with the measure with which you measure, it will be measured back to you.”
39. And he also spoke a parable to them: “Can a blind person guide a blind person. Will not both fall into a pit.”
40. “A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone, having been fully trained, will be like his teacher.”
41. “And why do you look at the speck that is in the eye of your brother, but the beam that is in your own eye you do not notice.”
42. “How are you able to say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ while you yourself do not see the beam in your own eye. Hypocrite, first remove the beam from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in the eye of your brother.”

Trees and Their Fruit

43. “For there is no good tree producing rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree producing good fruit.”
44. “For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not gather figs from thorns, nor pick grapes from a bramble.”
45. “The good person, out of the good treasure of the heart, brings forth good, and the evil person, out of the evil, brings forth evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

The House Built on the Rock

46. “And why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say.”
47. “Everyone coming to me and hearing my words and doing them, I will show you what he is like.”
48. “He is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep and laid a foundation upon the rock, and when a flood came, the river burst against that house, and was not able to shake it, because it had been well built.”
49. “But the one hearing and not doing is like a man who built a house upon the ground without foundation, against which the river burst, and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”
