The Feeding of the Four Thousand
1. In those days, as again a great crowd was present and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called the disciples to him and said to them.
2. “I have compassion on the crowd, because already three days they remain with me and they do not have anything to eat.”
3. “And if I send them away to their home fasting, they will faint on the road; and some of them have come from far.”
4. And his disciples answered him, “From where will anyone be able to satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness.”
5. And he was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”
6. And he directed the crowd to recline on the ground, and taking the seven loaves, giving thanks, he broke and was giving them to his disciples to set before them, and they set them before the crowd.
7. And they had a few small fish, and blessing them, he told these also to be set before them.
8. And they ate and were satisfied, and they took up seven baskets of leftover pieces.
9. And there were about four thousand, and he sent them away.
10. And immediately entering into the boat with his disciples, he came into the region of Dalmanutha.
The Pharisees Seek a Sign
11. And the Pharisees came out and began to debate with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, testing him.
12. And sighing deeply in his spirit, he says, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
13. And leaving them, he again embarked and went across to the other side.
The Leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod
14. And the disciples forgot to take bread, and except for one loaf they did not have any with them in the boat.
15. And he was ordering them, saying, “Watch, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
16. And they were reasoning with one another that they have no bread.
17. And knowing this, he says to them, “Why are you reasoning that you have no bread? Do you still not perceive nor understand? Have your hearts been hardened?”
18. “Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember.”
19. “When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They say to him, “Twelve.”
20. “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they say, “Seven.”
21. And he was saying to them, “Do you still not understand?”
Healing of a Blind Man at Bethsaida
22. And they come to Bethsaida, and they bring to him a blind man and beg him to touch him.
23. And taking hold of the blind man’s hand, he brought him outside the village, and spitting on his eyes, laying his hands on him, he was asking him, “Do you see anything?”
24. And looking up he said, “I see men, because like trees I see them walking.”
25. Then again he laid his hands upon his eyes, and he looked intently and was restored, and he saw everything clearly.
26. And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter into the village.”
Peter’s Confession of Jesus
27. And Jesus and his disciples went out to the villages of Caesarea Philippi, and on the way he was asking his disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?”
28. And they told him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”
29. And he was asking them, “But you, who do you say that I am?” Peter answering says to him, “You are the Christ.”
30. And he warned them to tell no one about him.
Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection
31. And he began to teach them that it is necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be killed, and after three days to rise.
32. And he was speaking this openly. And Peter, taking him aside, began to rebuke him.
33. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and says, “Get behind me, Satan, because you are not thinking the things of God but the things of men.”
The Cost of Discipleship
34. And calling the crowd together with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
35. “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake and for the gospel’s sake will save it.”
36. “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and to lose his own soul.”
37. “For what would a man give in exchange for his soul.”
38. “For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
