The Trial Before Pilate

1. And immediately, early in the morning, the chief priests held a council with the elders and scribes and the whole Sanhedrin, and after binding Jesus they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate.
2. And Pilate questioned Him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” And He answered him, “You are saying it.”
3. And the chief priests were accusing Him of many things.
4. And Pilate again questioned Him, saying, “Do you answer nothing? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
5. But Jesus no longer answered anything, so that Pilate marveled.

Barabbas Released Jesus Condemned

6. Now at the feast he would release for them one prisoner whom they requested.
7. And there was one called Barabbas, bound with the rebels who had committed murder in the rebellion.
8. And the crowd came up and began requesting that he do for them just as he had always done.
9. And Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?”
10. For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.
11. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would instead release Barabbas for them.
12. And Pilate again answering said to them, “What then shall I do with the one you call the king of the Jews?”
13. And they again cried out, “Crucify him!”
14. But Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify him!”
15. And Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

16. And the soldiers led Him away into the courtyard, which is the Praetorium, and they called together the whole cohort.
17. And they clothed Him in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns they put it on Him.
18. And they began to salute Him: “Hail, king of the Jews!”
19. And they were beating His head with a reed and spitting on Him, and kneeling they were bowing down to Him.
20. And when they had mocked Him, they stripped the purple from Him and put His own garments on Him, and they led Him out to crucify Him.

The Crucifixion

21. And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry His cross.
22. And they bring Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated “Place of a Skull.”
23. And they were giving Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it.
24. And they crucify Him, and divide His garments, casting lots for them to see what each should take.
25. And it was the third hour when they crucified Him.
26. And the inscription of the charge against Him was written: “The King of the Jews.”
27. And with Him they crucify two bandits, one on His right and one on His left.

28. So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And he was numbered among the transgressors.”
29. And those passing by were blaspheming Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days.”
30. “Save yourself by coming down from the cross.”
31. Likewise also the chief priests, mocking among themselves with the scribes, were saying, “He saved others; he is not able to save himself.”
32. “Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.” And those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

The Death of Jesus

33. And when the sixth hour came, darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.
34. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
35. And some of those standing there, hearing it, said, “Behold, he is calling for Elijah.”
36. And one ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “Leave Him alone; let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.”
37. And Jesus, having uttered a loud cry, breathed His last.
38. And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
39. And the centurion who was standing opposite Him, seeing that He had thus breathed His last, said, “Truly this man was the Son of God.”

The Burial of Jesus

40. And there were also women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
41. These, when He was in Galilee, had followed Him and ministered to Him, and many other women who had come up with Him to Jerusalem.
42. And when evening had already come, because it was Preparation Day, which is the day before the Sabbath.
43. Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council who also himself was waiting for the kingdom of God, came and boldly went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
44. And Pilate marveled that He was already dead, and summoning the centurion he asked him whether He had been dead for some time.
45. And when he learned it from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.
46. And having bought a linen cloth, he took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
47. And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where He was laid.
