The Temple’s Destruction Foretold
1. And as he was going out of the temple, one of his disciples says to him, “Teacher, look, what sort of stones and what sort of buildings!”
2. And Jesus said to him, “You see these great buildings? Not at all will a stone be left upon a stone that will not be thrown down.”
The Signs Before the End
3. And as he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately.
4. “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be completed?”
5. And Jesus began to say to them, “See that no one may lead you astray.”
6. “Many will come in my name saying, ‘I am he,’ and they will lead many astray.”
7. “And when you hear of wars and reports of wars, do not be alarmed; it must happen, but the end is not yet.”
8. “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines; these are the beginning of birth pains.”
Persecution of the Disciples
9. “But you, watch yourselves; they will deliver you to councils, and in synagogues you will be beaten, and before governors and kings you will stand because of me, for a testimony to them.”
10. “And first the good news must be proclaimed to all the nations.”
11. “And when they bring you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand what you should say, but whatever is given to you in that hour, this speak; for you are not the ones speaking, but the Holy Spirit.”
12. “And brother will deliver brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise up against parents and put them to death.”
13. “And you will be hated by all because of my name; but the one who endures to the end, this one will be saved.”
The Abomination and the Great Distress
14. “But when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing where it must not (let the reader understand), then let those in Judea flee to the mountains.”
15. “Let the one on the housetop not come down nor enter to take anything out of his house.”
16. “And let the one in the field not return to the things behind to take his cloak.”
17. “But woe to those who are pregnant and to those nursing in those days.”
18. “And pray that it might not happen in winter.”
19. “For those days will be distress such as has not happened from the beginning of creation which God created until now, and will never happen again.”
20. “And unless the Lord shortened the days, no flesh would be saved; but because of the elect whom he chose, he shortened the days.”
21. “And then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it.”
22. “For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will give signs and wonders so as to lead astray, if possible, the elect.”
23. “But you, watch; I have told you everything beforehand.”
The Coming of the Son of Man
24. “But in those days after that distress, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light.”
25. “And the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.”
26. “And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.”
27. “And then he will send the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.”
The Lesson from the Fig Tree
28. “From the fig tree learn the parable: when its branch already becomes tender and puts forth leaves, you know that the summer is near.”
29. “So also you, when you see these things happening, know that he is near, at the doors.”
30. “Truly I say to you that this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things happen.”
31. “The heaven and the earth will pass away, but my words will certainly not pass away.”
No One Knows the Day or Hour
32. “But concerning that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven nor the Son, but only the Father.”
33. “Watch, be alert, and pray; for you do not know when the time is.”
34. “It is like a man away from home, having left his house and given authority to his servants, to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch.”
35. “Therefore watch, for you do not know when the master of the house comes, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning.”
36. “Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.”
37. “And what I say to you, to all I say: Watch.”
