On this day (November 20) in 1847, the Scottish Anglican Hymn Writer and Poet, Henry Francis Lyte died. It is believed he wrote the words to the hymn, “Abide with me” in his final moments of earthly life. When you read the words it is likely that a man drawing to the end of life wrote such words. I particularly like the last verse,

“Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes.
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven’s morning breaks and earth’s vain shadows flee;
in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.”
