Concerning Righteousness Before Others

1. Pay attention not to do your righteousness before people in order to be seen by them, otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.
2. Therefore, when you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they may be glorified by people; truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
3. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.
4. So that your almsgiving may be in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

Concerning Prayer

5. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they are fond of standing to pray in the synagogues and at the corners of the streets so that they may be seen by people; truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
6. But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, and after shutting your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
7. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions like the heathen, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words.
8. Therefore do not become like them, for your Father knows what things you have need of before you ask him.

The Prayer Jesus Taught

9. Therefore pray in this way: “Our Father who is in heaven, let your name be regarded as holy.
10. Let your kingdom come; let your will be done, as in heaven also upon earth.
11. Give us today our bread for the coming day.
12. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.”
14. For if you forgive people their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15. But if you do not forgive people, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Concerning Fasting

16. And when you fast, do not become gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so that they may appear to people to be fasting; truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
17. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face.
18. So that you may not appear to people to be fasting but to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

Concerning Treasure

19. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on the earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.
20. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in or steal.
21. For where your treasure is, there also will be your heart.

The Healthy or Sick Eye

22. The lamp of the body is the eye; therefore if your eye is single, your whole body will be full of light.
23. But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness; therefore if the light in you is darkness, how great the darkness!

Serving God or Wealth

24. No one is able to serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold fast to one and despise the other; you are not able to serve God and wealth.

Concerning Anxiety

25. For this reason I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you may eat or what you may drink, nor about your body, what you may put on; is not life greater than food, and the body than clothing.
26. Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them; are you not worth more than they.
27. And who among you by worrying is able to add one cubit to his lifespan.
28. And why do you worry about clothing. Observe the lilies of the field, how they grow; they do not toil, nor do they spin.
29. Yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these.
30. And if God so clothes the grass of the field, which exists today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, you of little faith.
31. Therefore do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?”.
32. For all these things the Gentiles seek after, for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
33. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
34. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things; sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
