The Temptation of Jesus

1. Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil.
2. And having fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward he was hungry.
3. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves.”
4. But he answered and said, “It is written: ‘Not by bread alone shall man live, but by every word coming out of the mouth of God.’”
5. Then the devil takes him into the holy city and sets him on the pinnacle of the temple.
6. And he says to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and, ‘Upon their hands they will lift you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
7. Jesus said to him, “Again it is written: ‘You shall not test the Lord your God.’”
8. Again the devil takes him to a very high mountain and shows him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
9. And he said to him, “All these things I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”
10. Then Jesus says to him, “Go away, Satan; for it is written: ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him alone shall you serve.’”
11. Then the devil leaves him, and behold, angels came and were serving him.

The Beginning of Jesus’ Ministry in Galilee

12. Now when he heard that John had been handed over to prison, he withdrew into Galilee.
13. And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali.
14. So that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled.
15. “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations,”
16. “The people sitting in darkness have seen a great light, and to those sitting in the region and shadow of death, a light has risen for them.”
17. From then Jesus began to proclaim and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.”

Calling the First Disciples

18. And walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers.
19. And he says to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
20. And immediately, leaving the nets, they followed him.
21. And going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them.
22. And immediately, leaving the boat and their father, they followed him.

Jesus’ Ministry Throughout Galilee

23. And Jesus went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.
24. And the report of him went out into all Syria, and they brought to him all those badly afflicted, those suffering various diseases and torments, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralyzed, and he healed them.
25. And large crowds followed him from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan.
