Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard
1. “For the kingdom of the heavens is like a man, master of a house, who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard.
2. And having agreed with the labourers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
3. And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing in the marketplace idle,
4. and to them he said, ‘You go also into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ And they went.
5. And going out about the sixth and the ninth hour, he did likewise.
6. And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing, and he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’
7. They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go also into the vineyard.’
8. And when evening came, the lord of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the labourers and pay them their wages, beginning from the last to the first.’
9. And coming, those of the eleventh hour received a denarius.
10. And when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, and they also received each a denarius.
11. And receiving it, they murmured against the master of the house,
12. saying, ‘These last worked one hour, and you made them equal to us, who bore the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’
13. But he answering said to one of them, ‘Friend, I am not doing you wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius?
14. Take what is yours and go; but I wish to give this last one as you.
15. Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with what is mine? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’
16. So the last shall be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen.”
Prediction of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection
17. And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way and said to them,
18. “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death.
19. And they will deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, to scourge, and to crucify, and on the third day he will rise again.”
Request of James and John
20. Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, kneeling and asking something from him.
21. And he said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to him, “Command that these two sons of mine may sit, one on your right hand and one on your left, in your kingdom.”
22. But Jesus answering said, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptised with the baptism that I am baptised with?” They said to him, “We can.”
23. And he said to them, “You shall indeed drink my cup, and be baptised with the baptism that I am baptised with, but to sit on my right hand and on my left is not mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
Teaching on Servanthood
24. And hearing it, the ten were indignant concerning the two brothers.
25. But Jesus calling them to him said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones exercise authority over them.
26. But it is not so among you. But whoever wishes to become great among you, let him be your servant,
27. and whoever wishes to be first among you, let him be your slave,
28. just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Healing of Two Blind Men
29. And passing on from there to Jericho, a great crowd followed him.
30. An behold, two blind men sitting by the road side, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out to him, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!”
31. The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!”
32. So stopping and stood still Jesus called them and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?”
33. They said to him, “Lord, that our eyes might be opened.”
34. And Jesus, moved with compassion, touched their eyes; and immediately their eyes had sight restored to them, and they followed him.
