Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

1. And he went out from there and comes into his hometown, and his disciples follow him.
2. And when the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many hearing were astonished, saying, “From where are these things to this man, and what is the wisdom given to this man, and such powers happening through his hands.”
3. “Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us.” And they were offended at him.
4. And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honour except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.”
5. And he was not able to do any power there, except that a few sick people he laid hands on and healed.
6. And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went around the surrounding villages teaching.

The Mission of the Twelve

7. And he calls to himself the Twelve and began to send them out two by two, and he was giving them authority over unclean spirits.
8. And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff only, no bread, no bag, no copper in the belt.
9. But to put on sandals, and not to put on two tunics.
10. And he was saying to them, “Wherever you enter into a house, stay there until you depart from there.”
11. “And whatever place does not receive you nor hear you, going out from there shake off the dust that is under your feet as a testimony against them. Truly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah in that day of judgement that for that city. ”

14. And King Herod heard, for his name became manifest, and they were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and because of this the powers are at work in him.”
15. But others were saying, “He is Elijah,” and others were saying, “A prophet like one of the prophets.”
16. But Herod, hearing, said, “Whom I beheaded, John, this one has been raised.”
17. For Herod himself had sent and seized John and bound him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her.
18. For John was saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother.”
19. And Herodias was holding a grudge against him and was wanting to kill him, and she was not able.
20. For Herod was fearing John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and he was protecting him, and hearing him he was greatly perplexed, and he was listening gladly.
21. And when an opportune day came, when Herod on his birthday made a banquet for his nobles and the commanders and the leading men of Galilee.
22. And the daughter of Herodias, entering and dancing, pleased Herod and those reclining with him, and the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.”
23. And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask me I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”
24. And going out she said to her mother, “What shall I ask for.” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.”
25. And entering immediately with haste to the king she asked, saying, “I want that you give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
26. And the king, becoming deeply grieved, because of the oaths and those reclining with him did not wish to refuse her.
27. And immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded to bring his head, and he went and beheaded him in the prison.
28. And he brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.
29. And when his disciples heard, they came and took his corpse and placed it in a tomb.

The Feeding of the Five Thousand

31. And he says to them, “Come, you yourselves, privately to a desolate place and rest a little,” for those coming and those going were many, and they were not even finding time to eat.
32. And they went away in the boat privately to a desolate place.
33. And many saw them going and recognised them, and on foot from all the towns they ran together there and arrived before them.
34. And coming out Jesus saw a great crowd, and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.
35. And already the hour being late, the disciples came to him and were saying, “This place is desolate and already the hour is late.”
36. “Send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
37. But he, answering, said to them, “You give them to eat.” And they say to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them to eat.”
38. And he says to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And knowing, they say, “Five, and two fish.”
39. And he commanded them all to recline group by group on the green grass.
40. And they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties.
41. And taking the five loaves and the two fish, looking up into heaven he blessed and broke the loaves and was giving them to the disciples to set before them, and the two fish he divided for all.
42. And all ate and were satisfied.
43. And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish.
44. And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.

Jesus Walks on the Sea

45. And immediately he compelled his disciples to get into the boat and to go ahead to the other side, toward Bethsaida, while he dismisses the crowd.
46. And having taken leave of them, he went away to the mountain to pray.
47. And when evening came, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.
48. And seeing them being tormented in the rowing, for the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of the night he comes to them walking on the sea, and he intended to pass by them.
49. And they, seeing him walking on the sea, thought that it is a ghost and cried out.
50. For all saw him and were terrified. And immediately he spoke with them and says to them, “Take courage, I am; do not fear.”
51. And he went up to them into the boat, and the wind ceased, and exceedingly they were astounded among themselves.
52. For they did not understand concerning the loaves, but their heart had been hardened.

Healings at Gennesaret

53. And having crossed over to the land they came to Gennesaret and moored.
54. And when they had come out of the boat, immediately people recognised him.
55. And they ran around through that whole region and began to carry those being ill on mats to wherever they heard that he was.
56. And wherever he was entering, into villages or into cities or into fields, they were placing the sick in the marketplaces and begging him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak, and as many as touched him were being healed.
