Warning to the Rich Oppressors
Come now, you rich, weep and howl over your miseries that are coming upon you.
Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten.
Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be a testimony against you, and it will eat your flesh like fire. You have stored up treasure for the last days.
Behold, the wages of the labourers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.
You have lived in pleasure on the earth and been wanton; you have nourished your hearts in a day of slaughter.
You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous; he does not resist you.
Patience in Suffering
Therefore, be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient over it, until it receives the early and late rain.
You also be patient. Establish your hearts, because the coming of the Lord has drawn near.
Do not complain, brethren, against one another, that you may not be judged. Behold, the Judge is standing before the doors.
Take, brethren, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord as an example of suffering and patience.
Behold, we count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.
Warning Against Swearing
But above all, my brethren, do not swear, neither by heaven nor by earth nor by any other oath; but let your “yes” be yes, and your “no” be no, that you may not fall under judgment.
Prayer for Healing and Restoration
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praises.
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
Restoring Those Who Have Strayed
Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain; and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months.
And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.
Brethren, if anyone among you strays from the truth, and someone turns him back,
let him know that whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
