Introduction
Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those having obtained an equally precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Grace to you, and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
The Divine Supply and the Divine Call
As His divine power has given to us all things pertaining to life and godliness, through the acknowledgment of Him who called us by His own glory and virtue.
Through which have been given to us the exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world in lust.
The Virtue Ladder
For this very thing also, giving all diligence, in your faith supply virtue; and in virtue, knowledge;
and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control, perseverance; and in perseverance, godliness;
and in godliness, brotherly kindness; and in brotherly kindness, love.
For if these things are in you, and abound, they make you neither idle nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins.
Wherefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure; for doing these things you shall never stumble.
For in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.
Peter’s Reminder and Witness
Therefore I will always be ready to remind you of these things, though you already know them, and are established in the present truth.
I consider it right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by way of reminder;
knowing that the putting off of my tent is shortly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me.
And I will also endeavour that, after my departing, you may be able at any time to call these things to mind.
For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
For He received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
And we heard this voice coming from heaven, when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
And we have the more sure word of prophecy; to which you do well to pay attention, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn and the morning star rise in your hearts;
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation.
For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit.
