“By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin.”
Hebrews 11:24–25
Moses’ life is one of the most remarkable journeys in all of Scripture. Born under the shadow of death, raised in Pharaoh’s palace, called from a burning bush, and chosen to lead God’s people from bondage to freedom, his story is a portrait of God’s faithfulness and transforming power.
Moses’ life teaches us that God’s plans often unfold in stages. For forty years he lived in Egypt as a prince, learning leadership and wisdom. For another forty, he tended sheep in the wilderness, learning humility and dependence. Only then was he ready for the final forty years; leading Israel through the desert. God used every season, even the hidden ones, to shape His servant.
We often want God to use us immediately, but Moses reminds us that preparation takes time. The wilderness seasons, those quiet, unseen years are not wasted. They are where God shapes our hearts, teaching us trust and obedience.
When God called Moses from the burning bush, Moses protested: “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh?” (Exodus 3:11). Like Moses, we often feel inadequate. Yet God’s response still echoes today: “Certainly I will be with you.” (Exodus 3:12). God’s calling always comes with His presence. Our weakness is the very place His strength is revealed.
Even when Moses faltered, God remained faithful. Though he did not enter the Promised Land, he stood on the mountain and saw it from afar, proof that God keeps His promises. His life ended not in defeat but in victory, for Moses appeared centuries later with Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration, standing beside the glorified Christ (Matthew 17:3).
Life Lessons
- God’s timing is perfect.
Every season, palace, pasture, or wilderness has purpose in God’s plan. - God uses ordinary people.
Moses was a shepherd, not a superhero. God delights to use those who depend on Him fully. - Obedience brings freedom.
Just as Moses led Israel out of Egypt, Jesus leads us out of the bondage of sin when we trust and follow Him. - God’s presence is enough.
Like Moses, we can say, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here.” (Exodus 33:15, NASB95)
Application
Where are you in your journey today? Perhaps you feel stuck in a “desert season,” wondering if God still has a plan. Remember Moses. The same God who called him from the wilderness still calls you today. Trust that He is preparing you for what’s next. Yield to His shaping hand, and let His presence be your peace and strength.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the example of Moses, a man who learned to trust You in every season. Help me to be patient in my own wilderness, confident that You are working even when I cannot see it. Teach me humility, obedience, and courage to follow wherever You lead. May Your presence go before me, and may Your glory be seen through my life.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
