James Montgomery was born on this day (4 November) in 1771. He was a Scottish-born hymn writer and poet, who eventually settled in Sheffield. He was raised in the Moravian Church. Of Montgomery’s 400 hymns (including his versions of the Psalms) more than 100 are still in common use. His hymns are published in many hymnals. One of which is the “Gospel Hymn Book”. Hymn 747 in the Gospel Hymn Book is one of his most well-known, “For ever with the Lord.”
