“Is anything too difficult for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
Genesis 18:14

Sarah, the wife of Abraham, stands as one of the most remarkable women in Scripture. Her life was a tapestry of faith, waiting, disappointment, and eventual fulfillment. Though she was called to be the mother of nations, Sarah’s journey was not without struggle.

For years, she bore the pain of barrenness while watching others around her experience the joy of motherhood. In her humanity, Sarah tried to “help” God’s promise along by offering her maid Hagar to Abraham (Genesis 16:1–2). But that decision brought heartache and tension. Yet even in her missteps, God’s faithfulness did not waver.

When Sarah finally heard God reaffirm His promise that she would bear a son, she laughed in disbelief, “After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” (Genesis 18:12).

But God’s response was gentle and powerful: “Is anything too difficult for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14). That question still echoes to every believer who wrestles with doubt and delay.

At the appointed time, God fulfilled His word. Sarah conceived and gave birth to Isaac, and her laughter of disbelief became laughter of joy (Genesis 21:6). Her story reminds us that God’s promises are not dependent on our understanding, but on His unchanging faithfulness.

Life Lessons

  1. Faith Grows in the Waiting
Sarah’s decades of waiting were not wasted. God used that time to shape her faith and deepen her dependence on Him. Delays are often God’s preparation for greater blessings.
  2. Human Plans Cannot Accomplish Divine Promises
When Sarah took matters into her own hands, it brought turmoil. We, too, must remember that impatience often complicates what God is orchestrating perfectly.
  3. God’s Word Always Prevails
Despite her age, doubts, and failures, Sarah still received what was promised.

Hebrews 11:11 declares, “By faith even Sarah herself received ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised.” Faith does not ignore reality it chooses to trust God above it.

Application

Sarah’s life invites us to examine how we respond when God’s promises seem delayed. Do we try to force outcomes, or do we rest in His timing? When life feels barren, when prayers seem unanswered or dreams unfulfilled, we can cling to the truth that God’s delays are not His denials.

Whatever your situation, remember: nothing is too difficult for the Lord. His timing is perfect, His promises are sure, and His grace is sufficient even when your faith wavers.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the story of Sarah, which reminds us of Your faithfulness even when our faith falters. Help us to trust You in the waiting seasons of life. When doubts arise, teach us to remember that nothing is too difficult for You. Replace our impatience with peace, and our disbelief with joy. May our lives reflect a steadfast confidence in Your promises and Your perfect timing.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
