“We love, because He first loved us.”
1 John 4:19
John the Apostle, often called “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” walked closely with the Lord in a way that few others did. Alongside Peter and James, John witnessed some of Jesus’ most intimate moments, the raising of Jairus’s daughter, the transfiguration, and the agony in Gethsemane. Yet, John’s story is not merely one of privilege, but of profound transformation.
When we first meet John, he is not yet the gentle apostle of love we read in his letters. He and his brother James were known as the “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17), a title that reflected their fiery temper and impulsive nature. In Luke 9:54, they even asked Jesus, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But Jesus rebuked them. Over time, that thunderous heart became tender, transformed by divine love.
By the end of his life, John was known for his constant exhortation to “love one another.” His writings in the Gospel and Epistles of John overflow with the theme of love, not sentimental affection, but the sacrificial, faithful love that mirrors Christ Himself.
Life Lessons
- Love Transforms the Temperament
John teaches us that zeal without love can wound, but zeal shaped by love brings life. If Christ could take a man known for thunder and make him an apostle of love, He can certainly soften and sanctify our own rough edges. - Closeness to Jesus Changes Everything
John’s transformation didn’t happen by willpower, it came through intimacy. He leaned on Jesus’ chest at the Last Supper (John 13:25). The closer we draw to Christ in prayer, worship, and the Word, the more we reflect His heart. - Faithful Presence in Suffering
When the other disciples fled the cross, John remained. He stood near Jesus’ mother at Calvary and heard the words, “Behold, your mother!” (John 19:27). Love that endures doesn’t abandon others when the road grows dark, it stays, prays, and comforts. - Hope Beyond the Present Moment
John was also the author of Revelation, the vision of Christ’s ultimate victory. He reminds us that love and hope are inseparable: when we live in the love of Christ, we see beyond trials to eternal triumph.
Application
Are you more like the early “Son of Thunder”, passionate, but quick to speak or judge? Or are you learning to live as the Apostle of Love, patient, gentle, and steadfast?
John’s story calls us to transformation through abiding in Christ. Spend time each day drawing near to Jesus, not merely to know about Him, but to know Him personally. As His love shapes your heart, you’ll begin to reflect His character to a world in desperate need of grace.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the example of Your servant John. Thank You for showing us that Your love can change even the most fiery hearts. Teach me to abide in You as John did, to love deeply, to remain faithful, and to live with hope in Your promises. Transform my words, actions, and desires until they reflect Your heart of love.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
