Psalm 23 is known by many as “the Shepherd’s Psalm.” Psalm 23:1 says, “The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.” The Bible says in Isaiah 53:6, “All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.” We are mostly like sheep who wonder astray. Sheep often cannot defend themselves from predators.
The people of God often find themselves vulnerable to various spiritual attacks, making it essential for them to have spiritual defences in place to protect themselves from these attacks. In the Bible, there is a strong exhortation for believers to “put on the armour of God” as mentioned in Ephesians 6:11-18. This metaphorical armour is designed to equip believers with the strength and protection necessary to withstand these challenges. Ultimately, the most powerful safeguard against spiritual threats and adversaries is God Himself. He serves as a refuge and a shield for His people.
God is our Shepherd, as illustrated in Psalm 23. In this Psalm, David, a shepherd by profession, demonstrates how the Lord cares for the needs of His people. The role of the Shepherd (Ra’ah) is to nourish, care for, and safeguard his flock, which is why he carries a staff. The sheep have confidence in the shepherd and thus follow him. We go wherever our Shepherd guides us.
When we go our own way we are saying we don’t trust God. When you say, “God is My Shepherd” you are saying you submit to God’s loving care and protection over your life and soul.
