Notes on Genesis 1:16

The “greater light” mentioned in this verse is a type of Christ, the “Sun of righteousness” as mentioned in Mal. 4:2. He will take this character at His Second Coming when He will judge the world in righteousness. The sun is not seen, but there is light. Christ is that light (John 1:4-9). From a dispensational viewpoint the Church is in place as the “lesser light” as the stars are individual believers who are lights (Phil 2:15-16).

In Scripture a type serves as a divinely intended representation of a certain truth. It may be:

(1) A person – As in Romans 5:14 Adam was a type of Christ

(2) An event – As in 1 Corinthians 10:11, the end of the age.

(3) A thing – As in Hebrews 10:20, the sacrificial death of Jesus.

(4) An institution – As in Hebrews 9:11, the priestly role of Christ.

(5) A ceremonial – As in 1 Corinthians 5:7, Passover and unleavened bread to illustrate the need for the removal of sin.
