There is only one mention in the Bible of tattoos. Leviticus 19:28 says, “You shall not make any cuts in your body for the dead nor make any tattoo marks on yourselves: I am the Lord.” God gave this commandment to the nation of Israel to set them apart from other groups that marked their skin with images and symbols to their false gods. Although the law was given to Moses for the children of Israel to live by, the principle of the law is worth considering for Christians. The Law of Moses is not for Christians today, however, the law does teach us about the character and nature of God, thus the Christian can glean wisdom and instruction from the Law.

In the New Testament the Bible says, “Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments” (1 Timothy 2:9). Although this verse is addressing women the principles concern both men and women. The Bible teaches us that Christian people ought to dress modestly and reflect a godly image and nature. Tattoos draw attention to the person and display a message to the world. By their nature tattoos violate the principles of modesty.

It is important that you consider your motives for getting a tattoo. For example, many young people get the name of a boyfriend or girlfriend tattooed and later regret that permanent marking on their body especially if the relationship does not work out. Some people get a tattoo to show loyalty or support for a particular group or organization. Again, if your views or feelings change later in life you are still marked with that particular cause. The Bible encourages Christians to present their bodies as a living and holy sacrifice of service and worship to God (Romans 12:1-2).

The decision to get a tattoo is a matter of personal conscience and conviction before God. The decision should not be made lightly as it will have long lasting effects on you. The Bible  teaches that Christians are witnesses for Christ. Our chief aim and purpose in life is the glory of Christ. This truth ought to be considered if a Christian is thinking about getting a tattoo. What message does the tattoo display to the world? Does the tattoo bring glory to God? Will you regret it later in life? These are just some of the questions you must consider before you mark your body with a tattoo.
