Text: Psalm 46:1-2

V1 – God is our refuge and strength.

When trouble comes your way where do you flee to. None of us can say we have never experienced a troubling situation. In Matthew 14 when the disciples of our Lord saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled as they suspected it was a spirit and they cried out for fear. But Jesus spoke to them and said, “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.”

To be sure Peter cried out and asked him to allow him to walk on the water, the Lord Jesus granted him the ability to do. However due to the strength of the wind and Peter taking his eyes off the Lord he began to sink and cried out, “Lord, save me.”

This is similar to the situations we face in life. When the storms of life come to disturb our peace and disrupt our lives, we must fix our gaze on God, because He alone is our refuge and strength in times of trouble. Only when Peter took his eyes off the Lord that he began to sink. It is the same for us when we focus on our problems and troubles we start to sink under the pressure. Colossians 3:2 encourages us, “Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.” James 4:7 says, “Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

V2 – Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.

The phrase “fear not” or “do not be afraid” is said to appear 365 times in the Bible, one for every day of the year. This is a daily reminder from God that we have nothing to fear if we are under His wing. The earth may be removed and the mountains may be carried into the heart of deepest ocean, yet the people of God have nothing to fear because they are secure, safe and satisfied in Christ.

In Psalm 27:1 the Bible says, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

The Lord is the light and salvation of all who trust in Him to save them from the penalty of their sin. If we are trust in the Lord Jesus Christ to save us from our sin then we have nothing to fear because our sin has been dealt with by the precious blood of the Lord Jesus. The Lord Jesus Christ said in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” So with that in mind let us turn to Christ in faith and trust Him to take away our sin and cleanse us from the guilt of sin.
