On this day (June 1) 1793 Henry Francis Lyte was born. He was a Scottish Anglican minister, hymn writer and poet. He is best known for writing the words to the hymn “Abide with Me”. Lyte wrote it a few hours after conducting the final service at his church, which was probably 5 September 1847. His last recorded words were “Peace! Joy!”
