After a battle against the Amalekites Moses built an altar and called it, The Lord is My Banner, and said, “The Lord has sworn; the Lord will have war against Amalek from generation to generation” (Exodus 17:15-16). The name, Jehovah Nissi, signifies God’s protection and guidance and serves as a reminder of God’s presence and power in times of conflict.
In a battle an army will display a banner to show their allegiance. The banner identifies who they are fighting for and the authority they are under. For the Christian, Jehovah is our identity. We belong to God. We trust in God. We are under His authority.
In this life we are either on the Lord’s side or on Satan’s side. There is no middle ground. The Lord Jesus made this clear in Matthew 12:30. Psalm 60:4 says, “You have given a banner to those who fear You, That it may be displayed because of the truth.”
Joshua 24:15 says, “If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
We have a choice to make in life. The choice is between good and evil; God or Satan. The choice between two ways of life. We must choose whether we want to serve the Lord or not. Joshua encourages us to serve the Lord.
Another meaning to the name, Jehovah Nissi is “The Lord is My victory. The term “banner” in the original Hebrew text can also be interpreted as “a sign of victory.” All those under the banner of Jehovah have victory over sin, death and hell. Will you enlist under the mighty banner of victory in God? Will you surrender your heart to the Lord today? Will you have the victory over sin?
