A King is a man who is appointed by God to rule over a group of people. A good King will defend his people, restrain evil and conquer enemies. We are born sinners and in rebellion to God. In mercy and grace, God makes us willing to have Christ as Lord and King over our lives and souls. When we have Christ as our own He becomes not only our Saviour, but our King. As we are his, Christ defends us against the devil, the world and sin. We are transformed from the Kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of light. One of the titles of Christ in the Bible is, “King of kings” found in 1 Timothy 6:15. This means that the kings of the earth have a King, the Lord Jesus Christ. All earthly rulers are subject to Christ and his law.
In 2 Timothy 4:8 the Bible says, “in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.” This is a spiritual crown that the Lord gives to all those who love him. There is a connection here between a King and a crown. Traditionally, Kings are crowned. At his coronation on May 6, 2023 HM King Charles III was crowned with St Edward’s Crown. Our Lord does not wear a crown of gold, but a crown of thorns (Matthew 27:29). He is a humble King, a righteous King and a heavenly King. King Jesus conquered both his enemies and the enemies of his beloved people. Paul writing to the Church in Rome encourages us. He writes, “But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.”
Submit to Christ, as King. Obey the great ruler of the Church. Walk in obedience to Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ is our victory. He has defeated the enemy of souls. Our last enemy is death. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:25-26, “For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be abolished is death.” May the words of 1 Corinthians 15:55-56 be on our lips today, “O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.”
