A prophet is someone sent from God to mankind with a message from God that teaches a spiritual truth. A prophet addresses man’s ignorance. The prophet will reveal God’s message to mankind. Christ came to teach us the message of God’s salvation and plan for the world. Christ taught us the will of God. The will of God is taught by his Word and Spirit. In John 1:1 we read, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Jesus Christ is called the Word of God. He was with God in the beginning. This means that Christ was with God in creation and that He has always existed. The Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. In 1 Corinthians 2:10 the Word of God says, “For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.” All what we need to know about God is in the Bible. The Holy Spirit teaches us the things of God for our eternal benefit and blessing.

In Deuteronomy 18:18 Moses writes, “`I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. In Hebrews 1:1-2 we read, “God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.”

The Lord Jesus Christ is our last prophet. The word and the Spirit work together. We cannot know God nor his salvation without his revealed Word and Spirit. It is by the Spirit of Christ that we discern and receive what is necessary to salvation. This truth is taught in 1 Corinthians 2:14, “But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.” The natural man is someone who has not yet received the Holy Spirit. The Bible says that the natural man does not understand the things of God because he lacks the Holy Spirit. This can be seen both in society and in the visible church. Our society is godless and growing more godless each year. There is a spirit of indifference towards God in society. Sadly, this is also seen in some churches where a Christ foreign to Scripture is taught.

As you go about your day think about Christ as our prophet. Pray about the things he taught us about God. May the Lord Jesus Christ draw you closer to God by teaching you new things about God. May Christ bring to your memory today the great and wonderful truths of Holy Scripture.
