The Lord Jesus Christ is the mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5). He fulfils his position as mediator in the three offices of Prophet, Priest and King. In the Old Testament, we see prophets, priests and kings. The prophets pointed forward to Christ. They came from God with a message to teach the people. They were also preachers of God’s truth. Priests also pointed to Christ. They went to God on behalf of man to offer sacrifices of atonement. They also prayed for the people before God. Kings were appointed by God to rule over the people. Prophets addressed man’s lack of knowledge of God. Priests addressed man’s guilt before God. Kings addressed man’s bondage to sin and came to conquer evil. I am sure by now you can see how Christ fulfils all three of these offices.
All three offices can be seen in Christ. He was a humble servant and an exalted King. Christ executed his offices in humiliation on earth. He is now in an estate of exaltation in Heaven. How can we honour Christ as prophet, priest and king? Is Christ your prophet, priest and king? To have Christ as your own means much more than knowledge of him. To have Christ as your prophet means that you heed to his teachings and his loving rebuke. To have Christ as your priest means you trust him as your personal saviour and only sacrifice for your sins. To have Christ as your king means you acknowledge him as the ruler of your soul. So with all this said, can it be said of you that Christ is truly yours and you are truly his.
