The redemption work of Christ means that men and women can be united to God through faith in the finished work of Christ. What a blessing we have in union with the divine. The redemption is by the work of Christ’s passion and is applied by the work of the Holy Spirit. The chief cornerstone of our faith is the Lord Jesus Christ. If our faith is not founded upon Christ then the foundation of our faith will fail us.
In Ephesians 2:19-22 the Bible says, “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.”
The union between Christ and sinners means that we are made one with God. In 1 Corinthians 6:17 the Bible says, “But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him.” The people of God are like limbs of a body and Christ is the centre of that body. Ephesians 4:15-16 says, “but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.” We are united to Christ like a husband is united to his wife.
As we go about our day let us think about union with Christ and what it means to us as Christian people. We who were once far from God have been brought nigh unto Him through the work of Christ. We who were once strangers and foreigners have been made citizens of God’s household. Do you view yourself as one who is united to Christ? How does this union with Christ shape your view of the world, yourself and others? Does your union with Christ as a believer provoke you to share the Gospel with the lost world? May the words of 1 John 4:13 be on our hearts and minds today, “By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.”
