The consequences of the fall are vast and deep. When mankind fell into sin all was lost and fell under the wrath of God. We lost fellowship and communion with God. Sinfulness always leads to misery as sin is the source of all our misery in the world. As we have lost communion with God we are by nature at enmity with Him. As we have lost our peace in God, we are under wrath. As we have sinned against God and not received the full blessings of God we are under the curse. By nature, man is liable to misery, death and the pains of hell.
Remember this dear Christian soul. For the unbeliever, this world is the best they will ever have and know, and for the believer, this world is the worst they will ever know and have. For in the life to come our current state will not be as it is now. On earth, the people of God dwell in a foreign land. They do not belong on earth. They are pilgrims on their way to the heavenly city. Their home is not the earth, but the Kingdom of God.
On earth, we are subjected to the consequences of the fall. Death is the final consequence we all experience. Death is the separation of body and soul. At the point of death, our soul leaves our body. Separation is nothing new to us. By nature, we desire to live separately from God. In Genesis 3:8 we read, “They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.” All mankind by nature hides from God. We were never created to live separate from God, but due to sin we have a desire to live independently from our creator. We have the idea that we are missing out on something by living in accordance with the will of God.
We read in Genesis that Adam and Eve tried to separate themselves from each other and from the blame for their own sin. For example, Adam blame the woman for his sin. He was saying that his sin was nothing to do with him and if anyone was to blame for his sin it was Eve. There is something a lot more wicked than the mere blame here. Adam is actually saying to God that he ought to kill and blame the woman. We see this in society today. When at fault mankind seeks to divert the blame and responsibility to others.
Look at these questions and consider your answer before God. If sin brings misery then how should this help us to strive after holiness? How can we thank God for the finished work of Christ on the cross? Christ came to earth to reconcile sinners to God. With this in mind let us today and every day praise Him and look forward to that glorious day when we shall see him face to face.
