Why did God forbid our first parents to eat the fruit? There was nothing intrinsically evil or sinful about the fruit. It was a matter of faith and obedience to God. The eating of the fruit was sinful for the following reasons. The clearest sin to see from the text of Scripture is disobedience. Adam and Eve disobeyed God. Rebellion to God was another sin. Adam and Eve freely eat the fruit that God commanded them not to. They defied the sovereign creator of all things good. They were also unfaithful to God by conspiring with the enemy of God; they were guilty of unfaithfulness to God. They betrayed God by obeying the voice of evil. The actions of Adam and Eve made them traitors in the sight of God. Pride is often at the heart of ungratefulness. By aspiring to a higher state than they ought they were guilty of pride. Adam and Eve desired to be as God. As they desired to have something outside of God’s will they were not thankful for what God already provided for them. God gave them everything they needed in the Garden of Eden, yet they desired more.

Greed was another sin committed by our first parents in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve desired to taste what was forbidden by God. They wanted to experience something that was outside of the boundary of God’s will. That greed and desire gave way to unbelief. By not believing the voice of God our first parents were guilty of unbelief. Instead of listening to God they harkened unto the voice of the devil. By doing this they were guilty of murder. Our first parents are guilty of murder because by their sin they brought the judgment of God into the world. The Lord God gave them the warning that if they should eat and disobey, they would die. Adam and Eve disregarded the commandments of God and brought forth sin and death into the world.

The moral and lesson here is that one sin never stands alone. It is always accompanied by other sinful desires and thoughts. One sin always leads to another. The lives of Adam and Eve are in many ways similar to ours. God’s love was not reciprocated by Adam and Eve. Even though our first parents had all what they needed in the Garden of Eden they still wanted more. We are often ungrateful like Adam and Eve. Are we truly grateful for what God has given us? Are we walking in obedience to God? Do we give honour and glory to God?
