In the preaching of the Gospel, there is an outward call to come to Christ. God calls people who are spiritually far away from Him to draw nigh unto His Son, our Saviour. In Ephesians 2:13 the Bible says, “But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” The work of the Holy Spirit is essential and necessary for salvation. The Holy Spirit convicts us of righteousness, sin and judgment. God works His Spirit in the heart, mind and soul of a sinner to convict them of sin and their need of a Saviour.
The Holy Spirit enlightens the mind in the knowledge of Christ and renews our will to receive Him as Lord and Saviour. When the Gospel is preached the Holy Spirit does a work of persuading us to come to Christ. Faith comes by hearing the Word of Christ (Romans 10:17). The Holy Spirit not only persuades us but also enables us. The Bible speaks of those outside of Christ as being spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1), meaning cut off from the blessings of salvation. The Holy Spirit gives those who are spiritually dead new life, so we can embrace Christ in all His fullness.
In the preaching of the Gospel Christ is declared to us and freely offered to sinners. There is a call to everyone who hears to repent and believe. We know that not everyone will come to Christ, but many will. The work of the Holy Spirit causes people to ask, “What must I do to be saved?” The Spirit convinces, enlightens and renews. My challenge to you today is this. Are you doing all you can do to share the Gospel with lost souls? Are you encouraging people to look unto Christ? We are here on earth as ambassadors of Christ. We are to faithfully declare the truth as it is in Christ. Are you a faithful ambassador for Christ?
