There are 11 sons of Israel mentioned in Exodus 1.

Reuben – meaning “behold, a son”. He was the first of the six sons of Jacob and Leah. He was the founder of Israelite tribe of Reuben.

Simeon – meaning “He who hears”. He is the founder of the tribe of Simeon. One of the 12 tribes of Israel. Joshua locates its territory inside the boundaries of the tribe of Judah (Jos. 19.9) and is regarded as one of the ten lost tribes of Israel.

Levi – meaning, “united or joined”. He was the founder of the Levite tribe which served the priestly role for all the tribes of Israel.

Judah – meaning, “praise”. Judah was the first tribe to take root in the land of Israel. Located in the southern part of the territory. Jesse and his sons, including King David belonged to this tribe.

Issachar – meaning, “God has given me my reward”. He also founded a tribe.

Zebulun – meaning, “Gift from God or Honour”. His birth come during the rivalry between Rachel and Leah for their husband’s attention. (Gen. 30.20)

Benjamin – meaning, “Son of the right hand”. He was the youngest son of Jacob and Rachel. His mother Rachel died during his delivery. He was named, “Benoni, “son of my pain”. This was later changed to Benjamin by his father, Jacob. The tribe of Benjamin is located to the north of Judah and to south of the Kingdom of Israel. The first Israelite King, Saul came from this tribe. Jerusalem is located with the territory of the tribe of Benjamin.

Dan – meaning, “judgement” or “he judged”. He was the first son of Jacob and Bilhah. He was the founder of the the tribe of Dan. The tribe was located on the coastal region of the Promised Land.

Naphtali – meaning, “my struggle” was the sixth son of Jacob, the second of his two sons with Bilhah. He was the founder of the Israelite tribe of Naphtali. The tribe was in the north and is considered as one of the lost tribes of Israel.

Gad – meaning, “good fortune” was the founder of the tribe of Gad. Located to the east of the River Jordan and is one of the lost tribes.

Asher – meaning, “happy”, was a great man of food. Founder of the tribe of his namesake. The prophet Anna during the life of Christ was from the tribe of Asher.
