The Bible instructs us not to use the name of God and the various means by which He has revealed Himself in a disrespectful or incorrect manner. All that pertains to God is sacred. We must respect the things of God rather than desecrate them. When individuals express their animosity towards God, it constitutes blasphemy, thereby dishonouring and misusing His name. Since people cannot physically assault God, they resort to words to undermine His holiness and truth. They mention His name without due consideration, making frivolous oaths and cursing. Making light-hearted and incorrect references to God is also dishonouring the name of God. Their use of God’s holy name is careless and unwise.

Believers can also disrespect the name of the Lord by failing to take Him seriously or adopting a wrong attitude in their hearts. The truth of God’s Word is dishonoured when it isn’t communicated accurately, or when falsehoods are propagated regarding it. We should treat the Word of God with respect and avoid misinterpretation. Let us express gratitude to the Lord for His revealed truth. Let us strive to live in a way that honours the name of Christ. We should ensure that our actions do not bring shame or dishonour to His name. We must avoid using the Lord’s name in a meaningless or trivial way. As we go about our day, we should reflect on questions such as the following.

  1. Why is it damaging to use God’s name frivolously?
  2. Do we ever doubt or question God’s truth?
  3. Are we simply going through the motions in our faith?
