In this devotion, we will discuss the freedom of the will and what happened after the fall of Adam and Eve. The four estates that we will look at are as follows. Firstly, pre-fall; what the condition of man was before he fell into sin. Secondly, post-fall; what the condition of man is after he fell into sin. Thirdly, post-conversion; what the condition of man is after he comes to faith in Christ. Fourthly, heaven; the condition of man when he goes to be with the Lord in heaven.

God created humanity with the gift of free will. This indicates that when God made man, He endowed them with the capacity to choose between good and evil. When man willingly chose to sin, he fell from his state of innocence. Consequently, mankind acts in accordance to his sinful flesh. However, through faith, those who are in Christ possess the ability to do what is pleasing to God. Although Christians have a sinful nature and often neglect to fulfill what pleases God, they retain the capability to do that which is good, right, holy, and acceptable to Him. We will only attain complete perfection from sin after leaving our current bodies and life to be with the Lord in Heaven.

Adam and Eve, when they transgressed the commandments of God fell from the state in which He made for them. By choosing to sin against God, they forfeited all the privileges and joys of perfect communion with their Creator. The repercussions of their actions continue to affect us today. Adam and Eve possessed everything necessary in the Garden of Eden for a life of communion with God. Nevertheless, they opted to sin, thereby introducing sin, death, and all its woe into the world.

The key lesson we learn here is that our actions result in repercussions. While some may be immediate, others can have lasting effects. The repercussions for Adam and Eve impacted not only themselves but all of humanity. Our original parents faced spiritual, physical, and eternal death, among other consequences. We should express our gratitude to God for sending Christ into the world to deliver us from the repercussions of sin.
