- Speaking and adding to where God is silent.
- Believing that our righteousness comes from ourselves.
- Adding works to grace.
Legalism is a concept in ethics and religion that emphasizes strict adherence to laws or moral codes as the primary means of gaining divine favour or defining morality. In Christianity, it refers to the belief that one can earn God’s acceptance through performing works prescribed by God’s laws. This approach often leads to a focus on rigid obedience to rules rather than on developing a relationship with God or expressing love for Him. Legalism can manifest in various ways, from obsessive-compulsive behaviour to self-righteous denial of inner struggles. It’s seen as a perversion of the proper use of the law, which is meant to reveal the human inability to fully obey and lead to faith in Christ. The concept is not limited to religious contexts and can apply to any system where conformity to external standards is seen as making a person morally superior.
