The central theme of the Sermon is summarised in Matthew 5:48 “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” The word “perfect” does not mean sinless or moral perfection. It indicates completeness and wholeness in all that God desires us to be. This goal that is never attained in this life should continually challenge us to greater service for the Lord.
When applied to God it has the sense of praise (Gen. 9:26; 1 Ki. 1:48; Ps. 28:6), and when used of man denotes a state of happiness (1 Sa. 26:25; 1 Ki. 2:45).
There are 10 major sections of the Sermon on the Mount.
Blessed Through the Beatitudes: Kingdom Rewards.
Bible Passage: Matthew 5:3-12
In the Beatitudes, Jesus teaches about the characteristics of those who are blessed in the kingdom of heaven, offering a profound upside-down view of joy and rewards for traits like humility, mercy, and peacemaking. This passage helps us to understand that being part of God’s kingdom means showing love, kindness, and humility. It assures us that even when we face challenges or when others do not see our good behaviours, we are still blessed by God. The Beatitudes teach that true happiness and favour from God come from embodying the values of His kingdom rather than the values of the world, encouraging us to live in a way that reflects Christ’s love and character.
In the context of the entire Bible, these teachings of Jesus demonstrate His fulfilment of the law and the prophets, revealing how He embodies every aspect of blessedness and serves as the ultimate example of humility, mercy, and righteousness for His followers. The true path to happiness is found in living as a citizen of Christ’s kingdom, where God’s blessings are given to those with hearts aligned with His values.
