He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

Colossians 1:18

When people think of the word “church,” they usually picture a certain building right away. But it’s way more than that. In Matthew 16:18, Jesus says, “…I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.” He was thinking about something much bigger than just a building; He was talking about all believers together as the body of Christ. The church started on Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came and empowered Christ’s followers (Acts 2:1-47), and it has been growing ever since as more believers who are called “living stones” join to, build up a spiritual house (1 Pet. 2:5).

The church isn’t just a weekly event for socialising or hanging out. It’s really about the whole body of Christ, with everyone filled and driven by the Holy Spirit to do what Jesus wants us to do. Basically, the church’s mission is to help people know Jesus and make disciples, teaching them and helping them grow in their faith (Matt. 28:19-20).

This week, take some time to think about what part you can play in the church’s ministry.
