TCR Number: God’s Word a lamp 419
The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
Psalm 19:8
The Holy Bible is a light to all who read it and obey it. The Bible is more than just a book. If you have a Thompson Chain Reference Bible turn to the index number 419. This is the subject we will be focusing on in this study. There are 8 passages of Holy Scripture I would like to draw your attention to.
Psalm 119:105.
The Bible tells us that the Word of God is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Happy is the man that applies the Word of God to his life. We are to personally, practically, and persistently apply the Word of God to our life. The Word of God is described as a light. A light serves a purpose. A light allows us to see our way and to guide us. Holy Writ is a guidance in daily life. We are in darkness and cannot see unless we are lighten by God’s Word.
Psalm 119:130.
God’s Word gives us light and understanding. The Word of God is plain and clear to understand. It is so clear that even a simple man can understand the truths of God’s Word. The Lord has made it simple for us to understand so we are without excuse before Him. No-one can say to God that they could not understand the way of salvation. The Gospel is plain and clear for all to grasp.
Proverbs 2:6.
The Lord gives us wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. We can read what comes out of the mouth of God in His Word, the Holy Bible. We obtain true knowledge and understanding by reading the Word of God. The Bible shines a light on the matters and questions of life. There is no question that we cannot find an answer to in the Word of God. Some of the big questions of life are answered within the pages of Holy Writ. Why are we here? What is the meaning of life? What happens when we die? All these questions and more are answered by the mouth of God in Scripture.
Proverbs 6:23.
The Bible talks about itself as a guidebook to spiritual life. The law is a light because it brings about a knowledge of sin, righteousness, and judgment to come. The law is also our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ (Gal. 3:24-25). The purpose of the law of God is reproof our way of life.
Romans 15:4.
The Word of God is given for our learning. We learn God’s truths by patience. This is the comfort of the Scriptures. We have hope in God’s truth. Commenting on this verse in Romans, the Baptist Preacher, John Gill wrote, “ “to instruct in the knowledge of Christ, of his person, offices, grace, righteousness, obedience, sufferings, death, resurrection, and ascension; and of the great salvation and redemption he came to obtain, and has obtained…” The Bible teaches us that we can have forgiveness of our sin because Christ shed his blood for the remission of sin. The Bible also teaches us how we ought to live and how we are to treat our fellow man.
2 Corinthians 4:4.
The Bible declares the light of the glorious gospel of Christ. In this verse the Bible tells us that the god of this world, who is Satan has blinded the minds of those who do not believe the gospel. The Bible shines a light on the blinded mind and opens the spiritual eyes of all who do not yet believe the gospel.
2 Timothy 3:15-17.
The gospel makes us wise unto salvation. God’s Word is a light because it shines a light on our great need in life, forgiveness of our sin and hope in the life to come. All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God, which means God-given. The Bible is not merely a book that was written thousands of years ago. The Bible is the living and active Word of Almighty God. The message of the Bible is for us today. The Bible was given for our edification. The Bible is profitable for teaching, discipline, and instruction in our daily walk.
2 Peter 1:19.
The last verse we are going to look at in this study comes from Peter’s second letter. The apostle Peter tells us that we have a sure word of prophecy. We can have assurance in the Word of God because prophecy came by a moving of the Holy Spirit. We can have confidence in the Bible that when we read it we are reading the words of God. The Word of God is like a lamp that shines in a dark place. I am sure you will agree with me that at times this world can be a very dark place. Let us give thanks and praise to God that He has given us His Word to guide us through the darkness of this world.
