Reading: Titus 2:9-15

Theme: Obedience to our Master.

Christ is Our Master v9-10

One of the virtues of the Christian life is obedience to Christ and His Word. In verse 9 Paul encourages servants to be obedient to their own masters. As Christians our master is Christ. It is our joy and pleasure to walk in faithfulness to Christ. The obedient Christian life is not drudgery or a vain chore. Our Lord and Saviour is a loving master who always has the best interest of his people at heart. The commandments of Christ are not a burden, but a freedom.

Grace says “No” to Ungodliness v11-14

Jesus Christ appeared on earth by the grace of God. His life, death and resurrection were manifestations of grace. The greatest example of grace found in the Bible is what Christ did for sinners upon the cross.

Paul describes what it is like in this present world. We are encouraged to deny worldly lusts and ungodliness. Paul encourages believers to live soberly, righteously, and godly. Notice how Paul contrasts the negative with the positive. For example, ungodliness and godly.

In the latter part of Chapter 2 Paul writes about, “our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ.” This is reference to the divine nature of Christ and the triune Godhead. The trinity made salvation possible. The redemption of souls was a work of the whole Godhead. The blood of God, the Son was shed. God, the Holy Spirit kept Christ pure from sin. God, the Father raised Christ from the dead, defeating sin, death and hell.

Final Remarks

It is God’s desire that we do good and continue to grow in grace until he calls us home to heaven. We do good because we are saved and not to earn salvation. The letter to Titus encourages us as Christians, especially those who teach the Word of God to let no man despise you for preaching and living out the truth. Speak the Word confidently and with authority. There are many in the assembly that need to be confidently encouraged, and there are those who need to be confidently rebuked.
