Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.
1 Corinthians 12:27
We never really know the value of our limbs until we lose one. Imagine how your life would be if you lost your arms. You would not be able to do things you once did. Every limb has an important role and part in your life. The same applies to the body of Christ. Every Christian is part of Christ’s body. We have all been given gifts and talents, and a role in the local assembly. Some are called to preach. Some are called to teach. Others are called to other important roles in the assembly.
Regardless of our role we are all vital members of Christ’s body, and each member of the assembly is needed and provides an important position of service to the Lord and the local assembly. Do not think that you have a lesser role if you are called to make the tea or pray for the needs of the assembly. The one who makes the tea is just as important as the one who preaches and teaches. We need to use our gifts and talents for the glory of God and the service of his body.
Paul writes about our spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12. In verse 5 he writes about the varieties of ministries in the service of the Lord. In verse 7 the apostle writes that each of the ministries are for the common good. In verses 8-11 the offices of service are given. All of this works together for the glory of God. The body is one, yet there are many members, and all the members of the body are one in Christ.
Every function is very important. In verse 15 Paul writes that the foot will not say it is not part of the body because it is not a hand. He goes on to write about other parts of the body. The point Paul is making is each part of the body has its own individual part to play. The questions to consider today are these. What is your part in the body of Christ? How can you bring glory to Christ? Are you seeking to bring glory to Christ in your local assembly?
